Ecuador Flaunts Largest Rose Structure, Breaks World Record

In 2017, Ecuador exported nearly 159,000 tons of roses which generated revenues worth US$881 million.

A small Ecuadorian town of Tabacundo, nestled on the southeastern foothills of Mojanda Volcano, has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records by building the largest rose structure in the world.

The Guinness World Records company confirmed the news after they verified that the structure had 546,364 roses. The judges took nearly an entire day to confirm that a natural-size replica of an Indigenous pyramid, was built by installing 546,364 roses, 94 percent of them being red and the rest included white, pink and yellow roses.

“The world may fall, but they are going to give us the Guinness record. We feel winners and we are going to show the world where the most beautiful roses on earth are coming from,” Rosa Cisneros, one of the persons behind the winning project, told the Associated Press.

Initially, the mayor’s office had decided to surpass the world’s largest floral ornament brand with 220,000 stems in order to overtake the title from Germany, but eventually, Ecuador decided to use a staggering 500,000 stems.

The enormous structure which mimics a pre-Hispanic ceremonial center has been built in the middle of the city’s main plaza. It took nearly 1,500 people working an average of 16 hours daily for a week to complete it. The roses cover an area of 1,100 square meters and weigh 30 tonnes, according to news sources.

Before Ecuador, the world record for largest flower arrangement was in the reigns of Dubai Miracle Garden in United Arab Emirates, which was created in the form of a life-size sculpture of an Airbus A380 in 2016.

Ecuador is the world’s third-largest exporter of cut flowers, after the Netherlands and Colombia. According to the Associated Press, in 2017, Ecuador exported nearly 159,000 tons of roses which generated revenues worth US$881 million. The main buyers of Ecuador’s roses are the United States, Russia, and the European Union.
